Writting Spaces
I use many writing spaces on almost a regular basis. The most popular is probably, Facebook. Facebook is a way to keep in touch with friends, look at their pictures, and engage in many other pointless activities. I personally go on to see what my friends from home are up to while we are all away at school, it is also fun to post and look at pictures from all my friends here at Rowan. The next writing space I use is email. I only use it if I have to, not really for leisure. It is a great way to keep in touch with professors, or for my sorority, send a message to a large group of people at one time. A Third writing space I use, but not very often at all, are blogs. I really have only used them for class purposes, but it is a good way to see how your classmates feel about whatever topic is assigned and it is much less tedious than having to write a response on a sheet of paper.
When it comes to the internet it seems like every site immediate another. With my writing spaces I feel like Facebook is a better, more fun way of communicating with people. With Facebook , you can look at pictures, send a personal message that no one can see, send a message that everyone can see, have a status, let people know what you are doing etc. It is more attractive, especially to young people, as oppose to email which only allows you to send a message.

Writing Spaces
When you think of the different forms of writing, you often associate it with something that is physically being done. For instance, many people look at writing as something that is done through electronics, using the computer or through mechanics, using pen and paper. With the addition of using these forms of writing most frequently, I also use writing orally. Some characteristics of the traditional form of writing, using pen and paper, is the writer is allowed to write freely without the disruption of being reminded that a word is spelled wrong or used is a wrong way. It also provides satisfaction that what is written is solely the writers work and hasn’t been plagiarized. On the other hand, using electronics as a form of writing allows writing to be more precise and clear. With the help of spell check, the writer has the opportunity to have their work “double checked” for mistakes. Another characteristic of the computer is, with the experience, it makes the writing process quicker and neater. This form of writing makes it great for teachers to be able to clearly read what their student has written. Using the computer also allows writer’s to get a sense of direction and a better understanding of their work by using the internet. Lastly, some characteristics of writing used orally, are that the writer has an audience to help guide the word that are used. As with the traditional form of writing, oral writing, is “more natural” in that there isn’t too much preparation in the writing process. What makes this form of writing so unique is that people don’t usually associate a speech, or lecture as “writing”.

Writing
Through remediation over centuries, technology has evolved in new ways to use in the writing process. There are three main writing techniques I use on a daily basis that includes: using the electronic method of writing (computer), using the old fashion pencil and paper method, and using the World Wide Web in exploration of writing. These three techniques are very unique and help aid in the writing process.
Not only does the computer aid in our chance to have instant gratification, but also it allows us to type words and erase them, as we want without the mess of scribbling on the page or smudging the paper. The computer also has several different tools to make a paper or a writing assignment appear more attractive and entertaining to the viewer. There is even spell check option that can check the punctuation, spelling, and other grammatical errors that may arise in a paper. When an assignment is finished and typed, there is a print option to gain a hard copy of an assignment that is very neat and organized to the viewer.
Even though the use of paper and pencil appear to be outdated, I still find myself doing it even in the twenty first century. Sometimes when I write with a newer form of technology I find it hard to write. With using pencil and paper it feels like it has my signature down on paper and allows me to get lost in my writing and get more words down on paper.
The last form of writing is the World Wide Web. Using the web is another form of electronic use that is entertaining as well as extremely helpful. The web is filled with all sorts of research that could include photography, painting, film, games, blogs, and so on. The World Wide Web can have writing feel as if it is published, as viewers can search for the writing and find it instantaneously.
All three of these writing spaces remediate off of one another. The use of pencil is paper is remediate by the use of the computer itself. Pencil and paper appear to be the beginning step in writing, as the computer is a newer form of technology with lots of options to help in the writing process. There are different styles that computers have that allow the computer to be very unique and special than just simply using pencil and paper option.

Writing Spaces and Remediation
There are three writing spaces that I use most often. I use mechanical writing, which is using pencil and paper, the computer, and the World Wide Web. A characteristic of mechanical writing is that the writer always needs a surface and the tools being used become part of the definition of writing. Another characteristic is that the person gets to structure the letters and words using skills by how it should be written. A third characteristic is that “all writing entails method to arrange verbal ideas in a space for later examination by a reader.” Some characteristics of the computer is that it adds flexibility and efficiency of printing, has the capacity to adjust the text to each user’s needs, which is uncharacteristic of the classic industrial machine, and the processor itself contains no gears or any moving parts above the level of electrons and even the mechanical components of a computer system, such as disk drives and printer are characterized by rapid movement. Some characteristics of the World Wide Web are that it revolutionizes society of the way we think, a person can address information to the world, and it’s a technology that introduces people to different things like graphics and research.
What makes each of these writing spaces unique is that mechanical writing let’s you use your skill to write and to write in your own style using different tools. The computer is unique because it can make your writing look professional and style appropriate. It makes your writing look very organized and productive. The World Wide Web is unique because it provides people with information that a person may not find in a book. It is also unique because it gives people a way to publish information of things that are of importance to them or that they think is fun to read. If you take mechanical writing and computers, computers remediates mechanical writing because it changes the “look and feel” of writing and reading. When people have to use a computer to write instead of using a pencil and paper, it shows how technology has changed and people have adapted to this change or still are adapting to this change between both writing spaces.

writing space
First and foremost, I think it’s great that I have grown up during a time where there are so many different types of writing spaces. The three writing spaces that I use most often are electronic mail (e-mail), mechanical writing (pen and paper), and Facebook. The most convenient way of contacting me and for me to contact others is through electronic mail. I check my e-mail at least ten times a day. E-mail offers the variety of keeping it short and simple, when I’m in a hurry, or lengthy and personal when I haven’t spoken to someone in a while. I have folders in my e-mail account that keep all of my received and sent mail organized. It also helps me since I prefer to not speak on the phone. Mechanical writing is also an essential writing space for me, because I spend a lot of my time writing “to do’ lists, notes to myself, and sending out personalized stationary. I’m extremely organized and write everything down. My third writing space is Facebook. Facebook is a place I can express myself and keep in touch with my friends from high school and college. I can get in touch with long lost friends easily through Facebook and share photos as well.
Mechanical writing over the last twenty-five years has been remediated by technology, especially by my favorite, electronic mail. It has become a competition among generations as to which one is most accommodating. For example, my grandparents see no need to use a computer while I couldn’t imagine myself as a college student without one. Today, more and more people and businesses find the computer and e-mail to be very useful. I also think that the computer itself is being remediated often. There is always a new software or program being created for our conveniences, which can be argued as laziness from older generations. I still depend on writing with pen and paper to take notes and stay organized when I’m on the run, but I prefer using my computer as my main writing space. I look forward to seeing how these writing spaces continue to be remediated.
